Response about the peanuts

Name: Bryce Martin

Response: I've read that cashews are not nuts, somewhere over the years, and I vaguely recall something similar about peanuts. It all reminds me about tomatoes being fruits and not vegetables. I can't think of a peanut without thinking of George Washington Carver. That's because of my early schooling. Things you learn early stick with you. I hate picky eaters and I have noticed that some people do not like peanut butter or peanuts. I can't imagine why. It is something I actually think about, their motive in not liking peanuts. I knew of a young man who died from complications involved with putting redskin peanuts in his Coke bottle. The husks from the redskins collected over a period of time in a part of his anatomy and led to an early death.

Rambly Musing: Peanuts

Contributor: Margaret

Topic: A peanut is neither a pea nor a nut. Discuss!

Rambly Musing: Peanuts. Peanuts are my friend. Peanuts are a staple in veggie diets. Especially peanut butter. What easier way can you think of to get protein goodness in one easy to eat, convenient package? Spread it on your bagel, your toast, or your cracker, and voilà! It's energy to go.

Some people need more protein than others to function. I seem to be one of these people. My energy was rather low until a nutritionist suggested that I eat nuts or légumes with every meal. I've been doing this for a few weeks and I've never felt better. Peanuts is one of the many wonderful, portable snacks that does the trick. It's fatty, but it's the good fats.

With all the goodness of peanuts, I have to ask... What's with the name? What brilliant mind looked at a peanut and said, gee, this reminds me of a small, round, green, mushy pea? Obviously one who wasn't actually looking at or touching the peanut. And what's with the nut thing? Peanuts are not nuts. They're légumes people! Légumes! "Légumes are edible seeds enclosed in pods." Peanuts are edible seeds enclosed in pods. It's clear as peanutbutter, peanuts are neither peas nor are they nuts.

Despite the fact that these yummy little treats are misnamed, did you know that there is an old man inside of every one? Next time you have a peanut, open it up and look at the inside of both halves. On one of the ends, you'll see an old man with a mustache.

Enjoy and happy crunching!

Send me your Rambly Musings suggestions.

Googlism

Here is a fun game. Look up a name of a person or a character in http://www.googlism.com/. If the list you receive is long enough, you can create a "found" poem by selecting a few sporadic lines out of it.

gollum is not a hobbit
gollum is that you? gollum
gollum is actually a hobbit
gollum is also gay
gollum is dead
gollum is jewish
gollum is a completely digital creature

Exam-Time

Who would have thought that watching an exam could be so much fun?

The Appreciation of the Arts class at Jeff's high school (where he teaches) are doing their final exam Wed.-Sat. of this week. We went to see it last night... Their production of Tommy is fantastic! The crowd gave it a Level 4 (that was an A back in our day) by giving it a standing ovation.

Post-Macbeth

I've still got remnants of the paint on my hands that I used to create the "bloodied" baby apparition for the Macbeth scene read at Art Bar last night.

Out out damn spot!

Sacrifice

Me: Do you have baby dolls?
Friend: And something that looks like blood?
Cashier: <stunned face>
Me: Ya, and we need blood.
Cashier: <nervous laughter>
Me: Don't worry, it's for Shakespeare!
Friend: No it's not, it's for the ritual sacrifice.

I'm performing Shakespeare on Wednesday night at the Art Bar, "a celebration of the Bard's 439th birthday - with poetry readings in different poetic forms (beat, concrete, sound, spoken word, lyrical) of Shakespeare's classics..."

I'm going to be a witch in a scene of Macbeth, and also give voice to a bloody baby, the Second Apparition.

My Claim to Fame

My co-worker just pointed out that if I'm ever on Jeopardy and asked to say something interesting about myself, I could say,

"I know somebody who knows somebody from Desmoines."

(This came up because the famous Dave from Desmoines may be moving to Ottawa. Oh no! What will I do then?!)

SARS-Craze (or: Trapped in a Bad Movie)

I ventured out of my home today to go see the doctor about what turns out to be a never-ending cold.

I've been to this multi-doctor office a number of times and have never seen it like this before.

There were signs *everywhere* warning about SARS, do not come into this office, wash your hands upon entering and leaving. The nurses were ever-so-vigilent to make sure we abided and used the antiseptic goo pumps placed at each desk.

When I told the nurse my symptoms, she said, "Is it any wonder I'm wearing the surgical mask? Everyone's got it!" Umm.. excuse me. Everyone? I've got a cold, lady.

The nurses in the office weren't the only ones wearing masks. Outside and in the subway a lot of people have them too. It's not airborne, people. If it were, we'd *all* have it by now.

I was hearing on the news the other night about how some movie locations and schedules, big star concerts, and big star appearances have been affected. Everyone's afraid of Toronto, it seems. Craziness.

Not that I'm immune to the craze.. When I came down with a fever last week my first thought was, "SARS! OH MY GOD SARS!" I could hear the health-professional at the other end of the SARS hotline rolling his eyes at me when he mentioned how everyone is afraid they've got it.

Everyone is afraid.

It feels like I'm trapped in a bad movie.

Not Better

I thought I was pretty much recovered from my fever, but even now after the fever has gone away, the world is still a dizzy and disorienting place. Why does it do that to me??

Metafilter

The web is a big, big place.

It really is.

Sometimes I like to fill empty space with surfing, which is what drew me to blogs and my friends' blogs. Besides interesting facts about their lives and amusing anecdotes, I also get a nearly unlimited supply of interesting links.

Enter stage left: Metafilter. (My newest discovery--which, btw, I found off of a blog linked off of a blog linked off of a blog. :)
"MetaFilter is a community of users that find and discuss things on the web."

It's like the motherlode blog of all blogs. I will never, ever need to feel bored again.

Better

No fever today, hence not SARS. Not that there was any doubt... ok, maybe a little bit of doubt.... Hey! I was *delirious* yesterday, ok??

Still awfully drained, so another day home from work and sleeping all day. Mmmmm. Sleeeeeeep.

I'd go into work tomorrow except there's a Usability talk that happens to be approx. across the street from me. So going in would be Silly. Working from home would be Smart.

Actually, I wanted to go in anyway because I haven't been at work in a couple of days, but it seems everyone else is also working from home in order to get to the talk easily, so I wouldn't have a lift from work, so pretty much to get to the talk in time I'd have to leave work shortly after I got there....... Wow.. not seeing my office in 5 days (if you include the upcoming weekend). ~Scary.~ What ever will I do? How will I survive?

T. Paul, an awesome Van friend, has a blog. Yay! He's on the friends list now.

I'm glad to be able to keep in touch with Van friends, even if only virtually (and some telephonifically).

In other news..........
I'M SICK!!
I'm feverish and, as I'm told by my nursemaid, also delirious.

Who is also dictating, stuff like putting in that I'm delirious, and then the part about being my nursemaid.
And also helped me remember what that last word was.

Breaking Up Is Hard To Do

Breaking up a friendship is like breaking up with a lover. Apparently. Especially when you're as close as we were. We shared everything together... food, every little thing that happened in our days, every funny thing we heard or thought..

Today is Day 2 of not speaking to each other. Yesterday I felt free and unbounded, especially since our problems had gone on for a very, very long time and they had occupied most of my thinking-space.

If yesterday was Stage 1: free and unbounded, today would be Stages 2 and 3: Paranoia and Absence.

Paranoia because I'm constantly fearful of bumping into him. I don't know what I'd say or do.

Absence because I'm really missing everything we used to share. Now when I hear funny things, or there is something I do that I'm especially proud of, there is no one to tell.

My whole world has just been upturned. I hope it was the right thing to do.
